The origin of Ash: Slingshot's founders in conversation with One Mind
In an interview with the One Mind Accelerator, Slingshot AI co-founders Daniel Cahn and Neil Parikh explain how and why they built Ash, a foundation model for psychology trained on human therapy, and their vision for making quality mental health support available to everyone at a cost that "rounds to zero."
Speaking with the One Mind Accelerator, Slingshot AI co-founders Daniel Cahn and Neil Parikh trace Ash from its origins, an idea the two sketched out on a three-hour walk, to a "foundation model for psychology" trained on one of the largest and most diverse datasets of human therapy. They describe a three-step build: assembling the dataset through partnerships, clinical fine-tuning that converts human therapy into AI therapy, and reinforcement learning guided by signals read during conversations. Their thesis centers on connection: because the hard part of therapy is finding someone who truly connects with you, Ash learns from the full range of approaches, including CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS, and psychodynamic therapy, and tailors to each person. The founders frame success as user-defined and envision Netflix-scale access to support at a cost that effectively "rounds to zero."
