Our Approach to Privacy
Jul 10, 2025
We believe privacy is fundamental to mental health support. You can't have effective therapy without trust, and you can't have trust without privacy. That's why privacy comes first in everything we build.
We want to give you a place where you can talk about anything – your struggles, your relationships, or that thing you shoplifted when you were 12 – without fear that it will be used against you. Even if you're dealing with legal issues, we believe you should be able to get mental health support without encountering additional problems. So we take every measure possible to protect your data privacy.
Our Commitment to You
All conversational data is securely encrypted on our servers.
We don't collect any personally identifying information beyond your first name and email address, so we can't connect your conversations back to your real-world identity.
If you delete your account, we delete your personal data, except for anything we’d legally have to hold onto.
If you consent to anonymously improve our AI models, we store a copy of your data fully anonymized, replacing identifiers (e.g. “Daniel at McKinsey and co.” might become “John at Bain and co.”). We don’t connect your anonymized data with anything to do with your identity (e.g. your email address), and we just use your data to improve our models.
Ash is not a mandated reporter. If you bring up self-harm, Ash will encourage you to access crisis resources, but Ash will not report you to authorities. Your autonomy is important, and we value your right to make decisions for yourself. Ash does not have the ability to contact anyone outside of the app on your behalf.
We’re firmly committed to never selling your data.
